November 2009

...There is no single recipe for making the perfect tea, just as there are no rules for producing a Titian or a Sesson.
Each preparation of the leaves has its individuality, its special affinity with water and heat,
its hereditary memories to recall, its own method of telling a story.
The truly beautiful must be always in it...

Mocha Mate: Do you know a coffee drinker who wants to switch to tea, but hesitates because they believe tea does not have enough "flavor," or "aroma," or "caffeine kick?" Here is a blend that answers all three issues! Mocha Mate starts with traditional South American Yerba Mate, which has been roasted to add a rich, dark flavor. Then, a touch of chocolate and vanilla have been added to round out the richness. You can create a high-intensity steep by packing in the leaves, bringing out the caffeine-like matine for a sure fire way to wake up!
 $6.00 / 2 oz.

Traditional Japanese Tea Demonstrations Performed Monthly at
Japanese Friendship Garden

The San Diego Chapter of Urasenke Tankokai performs traditional Japanese tea demonstrations once a month on Saturdays at Balboa Park's Japanese Friendship Garden. The next demonstration will be held December 19th, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Each ceremony is accompanied by an English narration, and guests can also try the tea (matcha) together with a traditional Japanese sweet, for $3. Participation is free with paid admission into the park. It is a wonderful introduction to the world of chado. For more information, go to the Calendar page of the Japanese Friendship Garden's website, www.niwa.org.
