Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is Monday, January 23, 2012. This will be the year of the Dragon, the most highly regarded of the twelve lunar zodiac animals. The Dragon symbolizes strength and good fortune.
In the days leading up to Chinese New Year, this is the time to thoroughly clean house and clear away evil spirits.
With the first day of the new year, families gather to honor their elders. Red envelopes containing fresh bills are shared with young children and unmarried adults.
Many families continue to celebrate throughout the following days, including special ceremonies planned each day. Overall, Chinese New Year is the most important holiday of the year.
